What's happening in Markham...

The Markham RainGarden Needs You
Starting Saturday, June 27, and continuing for two to three weekends, Markham Neighbors will be weeding the RainGarden (SW 17 and Marigold). Any time that you can give to helping weed would be much appreciated. To make it easier to get the whole thing done, we'll be loading the weeds into yard debris bags that SOLV will pick up. This way we don't have to try and do it all in one day.

Weeding starts about 10 AM. Please bring your own gloves and shovels/garden forks, etc. If you can come out for a few hours, please let Amanda Black (amanda@anastasia.com) know so she can estimate the amount of munchies to bring.

Trevor Robins new Markham president
Neighborns unanimously elected Trevor Robins president at our annual business meeting June 9. Former president John Gibbon was unanimously elected secretary.

Neighbors enjoyed meeting and greeting one another at our new meeting venue, Zara Rahmani's care facility (19th and Marigold). We discussed a new idea from the city called Community Streets (CSs). CSs are a new design standard for neighborhood such as Markham where topography, low traffic, and building patterns don’t fit existing city standards for streets. CSs are narrower than standard streets, have pedestrian walkways rather than sidewalks, control water run-off with swales and pervious materials, and are cheaper to build than traditional streets. Seventy homes in Markham are on streets the city proposes for CSs. Home-owner approval for construction could not proceed one block at a time; the city would require a significant number of blocks with residential buy-in before they would start construction.
